Magic Bus

First aired

October 24, 1983

Synopsis

Lee and Amanda pursue a survivalist group who have stolen the Vigilant, an armed RV that is really a top secret assault weapon. The group is planning to test it on an unarmed target: Donoghue Dam. The Vigilant was being hidden in Amanda’s driveway, and Amanda sees it being driven away by a "weasel-faced man" while she is preparing a picnic lunch for Lee and company. They are holding the Vigilant hostage for the return of Gary and Gertrude Garber, the Stewed Tomato Two. Lee and Amanda must recover the vehicle and then prevent its programmed instructions from being carried out before it's too late.

Best Lines

Lee: “Oh. Oh just what I like. A war you can throw at a minute’s notice with no messy cleanup.”

Phillip: “Hello. Is this Dean? He says not in a thousand years.”

Amanda: “Hello sir. Oh I’m sorry to interrupt, but I was wondering if I could go. You see my younger son Jamie, you know the little one, he’s out in the car with a bunch of fish and the last bunch died and well you know, it’s very hot out there. I’d like to get them home because if this bunch dies too… well, gee I just don’t know how I’d face him.”

Amanda: “When I told you not to call, I didn’t mean you could come sit in my bushes.”

Amanda: “I’ve never seen your legs before.”
Lee: “So, what do you think?”
Amanda: “Not bad.”

Amanda: “Watch your hands, please.”

Lee: “Go on, leave me!”
Amanda: “Leave me, he says.”
Lee: “They tell us to say that. Thank God you never listen to me.”

The Vigilant: “Automatic detonation has been cancelled. Thank you… Have a nice day.”

Amanda: “Yeah. Well, just in case you don't, do you think maybe you could say something nice about my work? I mean, after all, I think I did contribute something here.”
Lee: “Hmm… Okay, uh, your work was . . . not bad.”
Amanda: “Not bad?”
Lee: “Yeah. Not bad.”
Amanda: “Not bad.”
Lee: “Well, you think my legs are just "okay," I think your work was just "not bad."”
Amanda: “That is so petty.”
Lee: “Care to change your opinion?”

And now... episode bloopers from Katie "The Continuity Queen"

1. So is this thing fighting wars in the U.S.? Cause otherwise it'd have to be flown to where ever the war is. How is that supposed to be unobtrusive? Also seems expensive.

2. Catch this if you can. As all are standing outside the RV discussing the trip Lee hits Fran's arm ever so softly, causing her purse strap to fall. Fran never flinches (good acting) and with the speed of only a super power can have she moves the strap back up without appearing to move. Lightening quick.

3. Amanda, not to pick on your housekeeping skills, but 2 pairs of pants for one load of laundry? Ever hear of water conservation? Can’t they soak for awhile until you get more?

4. Fav line- is this Dean? He says not in a thousand years. LOL

5. Should we assume it’s June? It’s very bright out for being 5:30 am. Mid June is the summer solstice, longer days. And doesn't 49 degrees seem awfully warm for 5:30?

6. Has this diaper truck been outside the whole night? Wouldn’t it look weird for a diaper truck to be there all night? Do you think her neighbors ever suspect anything? Throughout the years there's been many different types of trucks/vans outside, always across from her place.

7. Do you think the congressman tapes all his calls? There would, at that time, be no reason to suspect anything of anyone. The RV was just stolen that morning. So it can't be for ransom demands.

8. Like how, even then, they can talk with just their eyes. Point of example, the conversation they have through Billy’s office window. Love those little connections. Also enjoy the amandaramble and Lee's reaction to it.

9. So, where do you think she told Jamie she was going? He’s waiting outside in the car with the fish. Ok, you stay here sweetheart. Mommy has to go inside the secret building and tell them about the weasel-faced man that I saw steal the secret govt. RV that we had in the drive last night. That’s a good boy. Kisses his forehead and leaves.

10. Dottie says she vanished with scarcely a word this morning. Just how does she vanish so fast if she took Jamie with her? Had to say a couple of things to 1. Get him to come and 2. To tell Dottie that she had him. Logic guy…

11. Holy plaid Batman! With all that's right in this world why are his clothes so wrong? Red/blue plaid shirt with a green argyle sweater over? Clothes guy… why did we hire you? Are you color and pattern blind? We’re going to have to deduct pay for this one.

12. If the kitchen window is open why is the blind down? Just seems weird. Love the whole watering scene.

13. That has to be the loudest silencer. He’s outside and we can hear it.

14. Knee socks? Come on, be a man. Push them down. You look like a geek. Nice legs though.

15. So how come she can do this course no problem, but when she gets to station one in Class Act she can't do that one? Or at least not as confidently. Bad writers for dumbing her down.

16. When was it established that KJ hurt her foot? I know in Service Above she wears a cast (not explained in ep and hidden) and in Gift Horse it is explained and shown. I ask cause she's limping pretty badly here. Watch her as they walk just before she sees the weasel-faced man. Big time limping going on.

17. Notice how the congressman bounces with their names. After the phone call it’s "They have Stetson and the King woman", then just a sentence later it’s "They'll kill Lee and Amanda." Did he even know her name?

18. Again with the bright early morning. The deadline is 7 so we have to assume when they pull up in front of Donahue Dam it’s around 6. Btw, is that a real dam?

19. Are we to assume that Blue Leader is out here in his limo monitoring the situation? Or is it Billy? Amanda’s message is relayed to Blue Leader and we see Billy taking that info. Just trying to understand the chain of command.

20. Another new number. 555-3434. Maybe they change their number every couple of weeks. They are the ultra secret spy place.

21. Oh Pax. You cut a couple of great lines. After he's shot and she drags him in… leave him he says. They tell us to say that. Thank goodness you never listen to me. Hilarious. Bad Pax.

22. Some state of the art RV this is. It takes her 4 tries to get the engine to turn over. The best all those dollars and hours could buy. Don’t you feel proud?

23. That has to be the longest 10 minutes ever to tick by a clock. We have the conversation by the door, the shoot out, Lee experimenting with the buttons (time is at 6:55 here), all the driving and avoiding and still another minute or so as they all encircle it. Guess time slows when the fate of the world is on the line.

24. How can he tell she's headed back to the dam by that view? It’s the back view; it’s a dirt road with bushes and dust. I see no markers for him to id and decided she's going back? I know it’s his power of location getting more powerful (first developed in First Time).

25. More stuff to be proud of. What is that step back the army guys take? Fearless soldiers standing tall, just back a bit. And should Billy really halt the attack on the RV? At that point the missiles can't be stopped and it is aimed at the dam. If it’s not stopped they and the valley are history. Just cause Lee and Amanda are in it shouldn't mean anything over the security of the area.

26. Notice how Billy asks Amanda if she's alright and then almost as an after thought asks Lee? Such respect. Poor Lee.

27. Ok, so Fran thinks Lee drove. Does that mean she thinks Amanda did the weapons? One person couldn't have done both. She was in it. She saw the set-up. She so hates giving her that compliment.

28. Lee’s bullet wound? Was it a through-and-through? Or is the bullet still in the leg? Shouldn’t he need surgery or something? Fran did in the Triumvirate, same kind of wound. How’s he supposed to drive with a bullet in his leg?

Special thanks to Katie for all of the time and hard work she has put into these Continuity Queen posts!

The Song You Hear Playing

Magic Carpet Ride
Steppenwolf

I like to dream yes, yes, right between my sound machine
On a cloud of sound I drift in the night
Any place it goes is right
Goes far, flies near, to the stars away from here

Well, you don't know what we can find
Why don't you come with me little girl
On a magic carpet ride
You don't know what we can see
Why don't you tell your dreams to me
Fantasy will set you free
Close your eyes girl
Look inside girl
Let the sound take you away

Last night I held Aladdin's lamp
And so I wished that I could stay
Before the thing could answer me
Well, someone came and took the lamp away
I looked around, a lousy candle's all I found

Well, you don't know what we can find
Why don't you come with me little girl
On a magic carpet ride
Well, you don't know what we can see
Why don't you tell your dreams to me
Fantasy will set you free
Close your eyes girl
Look inside girl
Let the sound take you away
