The Long Christmas Eve

First aired

December 19, 1983

Synopsis

Just before Christmas, Ted Rudolph (Janus), a bitter ex-agent, threatens to reveal secrets and name names if his long-estranged daughter Karen is not found and returned to him. He also wants to be brought in from the deep cover field work he’s been doing, and be given a new identity. On Christmas Eve, Lee and Amanda go out to meet him at a cabin in the woods and pretend that Amanda is his daughter to buy time. The Soviets are after Janus and attack the cabin. Amanda ends up going out with a white flag and gets them to declare a truce. Amanda admits she’s not Rudolph’s daughter when he tries to pull parental rank to prevent her from going to the car for the medical kit. One of the Soviet agents and Lee are both shot. Amanda makes beans, the Soviets share their herring and vodka. The two Soviet agents, Amanda, Lee, and Janus end up getting drunk on the Russian vodka the Soviets have with them.

Best Lines

Amanda: Lee.. isn’t this a little sudden? I mean, shouldn’t we talk about this? This would compromise our whole professional relationship.

Lee: Amanda, will you shut up please.

Lee: Alright they’re gone.

Amanda: Who’s gone?

Lee: I saw two men over there with rifles. They’re probably just hunters. Come on.

Amanda: So, that’s what you were doing. You were protecting me.

Lee: Sure. What else would I be doing?

Amanda: Nothing. That was very gallant of you. Thank you.

******************************

Amanda: Are you sure you know where we’re going?

Lee: Yes. Alright, it’s north by northwest of here. Where’s the sun? Uh, there. So if that’s due west…

Amanda: Of course, you have to take into account the seasonal adjustment.

Lee: We go that way.

Amanda: Well now, the sun is due west only at the equinox and we’re three days past the winter solstice. I think I’d better just check the moss.

Lee: The moss?

Amanda: Yeah the moss, you see…well, look, you just…you just look at a tree. You find a tree and the moss always grows on the north side. So that’s the north side of the tree because moss always….

Lee: Amanda. Amanda!

Amanda: What?

Lee: Do you really think that some Mickey Mouse spy course you’re taking can replace actual experience in the field?

Amanda: This isn’t from one of my courses. This is from the Cub Scout handbook.

Lee: Aw…

Amanda: Say what you will about the Scouts, but they certainly can find their way out of the woods. North is that way.

******************************

Amanda: May I have your attention please? I know you’re out there. We have a wounded man inside. He’s hurt very badly and I need to go to the car to get the medical supply kit. So that I can help him, so… It’s awfully cold out here so if you’d like to come inside the cabin and wait for me… that would be alright. Look… it’s Christmas Eve… and I don’t know what that means to you, but to me it means that we should be thinking about peace… and helping each other. I shouldn’t, uh, I shouldn’t be here. I should be at home. I have... two little boys… Philip, he’s 10 and Jamie, he’s 8, and I should be at home filling their stockings… and I wish I were, but I’m not. I’m here. All I’m asking you to do is just call a truce for a few minutes so that we can help each other and that’s all. Now I’m going to step down and please don’t shoot me.

******************************

Dimitri: I eat your beans, you drink my vodka.

Amanda: Well, if you insist, maybe one little nip to be sociable.

******************************

Amanda: Look, how often does a surburban lady like me get to drink vodka with the KGB and eat beans on Christmas?

Lee: Speaking of vodka…

Amanda: Oh no, I.. I really don’t think you should.

Lee: Uh, for medicinal purposes.

Amanda: Will you eat your beans?

And now... episode bloopers from Katie "The Continuity Queen"

1. White tie, dark plaid shirt and black coat? Clothes guy did you actually look at that combination and think it worked?

2. "His is so considerate.” "Yeah, he is to a fault." Kinda says it all right there doesn't it. And later on she describes him as a friend not a boyfriend. Boy is he on the outs big time.

3. Socks. Great gift. I thought for sure it was going to be a scarf. I would've lost it had it been.

4. How come we only hear certain parts of the phone call to Billy? I'd understand from Billy’s side only Billy but we also hear one line from Jensen on Billy’s side. Seems to me if we can hear one line we should be able to hear them all. And then we hear the bug from Jensen’s side and still only get Billy’s side plus one line about the drop we don't hear on Billy’s side. I say this because Billy’s responses seem to be in answer to demands. Bug not working correctly?

5. And what usual drop? The guy has been under deep cover for 15 years. Doesn’t that usually mean no contact? Why would there be a usual drop? And it doesn't seem like any of them have ever worked with him so why would they have a usual drop in the first place?

6. So did the King household change tradition? This Christmas they open on the eve, but in Santa’s Got a Brand… they don't open till the day. What kind of tradition is it if it's only 3 years old?

7. Is that Cub Scouts or Junior Trailblazers?

8. Just like a man. Can’t admit he's lost. Good thing she's there. He'd be wandering around the woods for days without her moss.

9. Kinda twilighty zone that they use Karen later. Do you think the writers just couldn't think of another woman's name and thought Karen sounded good before, let's use it again?

10. Does Jensen have his own car? Cause I don't think the 3 of them will fit in the Porsche.

11. Explain to me the relocation program. I thought once you are in it that's it. No contact with left-behind people. Why does Jensen expect to hook up with Karen after he establishes his new life then? He’s an old pro. He'd know they'd be watching her, using her. Seems risky to contact.

12. So how does Lucas fit into the chain of command? Above Dirk, below Smythe?

13. What is it with white sweaters and bloody gun shot wounds? I know so we can see it. I just don't like the correlation.

14. Now talk about the bravest, the smartest woman he's ever known. To go out there unarmed against 2 people who are armed, who possibly don't speak English, who have been shooting at you and still may or may not care that it's Christmas Eve. Wow! You go girl! And great speech. I was mesmerized.

15. Love Lee's puzzlement when he wakes up and his astonishment at the truce. His face speaks volumes. Someone tell me about the brothers Karamozoff. I've heard of but don't know about. Thanks.

16. Hasn’t Jensen been at the cabin for awhile? At least a couple of days. Why doesn't he have any food other than beans? Fasting?

17. Love the scene when he's practically begging for the vodka. Again the eyes say it all. Will you eat your beans? The power of vodka.

18. I see Lee's super powers have kicked in. How else do you explain his sudden recovery? So they had antiseptic in the kit. That is not even close to a miracle cure for a bullet wound. He’s even leaning on that arm later. The power.

19. What time do you think it is when we see Dotty at the window? If we count up, it doesn't seem to match. It’s December so it'd get dark at what… 5? Lee gets shot say 5-ish. Amanda calls the truce maybe 1/2 hour later. Evan goes to the car for supplies. That's 3 hours roundtrip. She treats them, cooks the beans and drinks. Maybe an hour. So that's 5 + .5 + 3 + 1 = 9:30. Isn’t that kinda late for the boys?

20. Just how much vodka is in that flask? They each take a pretty healthy swig and then each have a couple of cups if not more. Doesn’t look that big.

21. Ok lap sitting? Love that. Ok, not really. She’s actually on the arm, still sitting rather close though.

22. Yeah, the boys bought the Santa story. See them roll their eyes? LOL

23. Um… Dottie get her days mixed up? She tells the boys mama went to deliver presents to her clients, but that was the day before. I'll try to explain why I think so. When Jensen calls Billy and tells him to find Karen, Billy says be reasonable man. The 25th is in less than 2 days. Implying it's the 23rd. We know Lee and Amanda set out on the 24th. Evidenced by new clothes and Lee asking if she studied. New day. She should've been home the night of the 23rd and had a new excuse for Dottie for the 24th. Unless she just told her more presents. I guess that could work too. Anyway at least we know it's not supposed to be the same trip.

23. No hangover? Seems she was a bit happy last night and with her being so small and not a drinker I'd have thought it leave its mark.

24. Yeah Portland!!! I'm assuming Oregon of course. Can you tell that's where I'm from?

25. Billy must have been by the hospital early. He beat the boys coming down for presents. At that age I'd think they'd be down at the crack of dawn.

26. Notice the smile he has when he realizes it’s Amanda on the phone. Nurses must be ok at this hospital. Doesn’t appear he needs her to run interference.

27. Anyone else notice the weather looks unseasonably warm? I'm not on the East Coast, so I may be wrong. Doesn’t DC usually have snow in December? And if not the city, how about the mountains? Also weird watching a Christmas ep when it’s 95 degrees here.

Special thanks to Katie for all of the time and hard work she has put into these Continuity Queen posts!

The Song You Hear Playing

Silent Night, Holy Night
traditional

Silent night Holy night
All is calm all is bright
'Round yon virgin Mother and Child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heav'nly hosts sing Alleluia;
Christ the Savior is born;
Christ the Savior is born.

Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love's pure light.
Radiant beams from Thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth;
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.
